Futa has long been used as a catch-all for “female appearance, with penis.” However, this doesn’t work in a more inclusive environment where gender identities are much more complex than that. It’s also a holdover from early-aughts porn definitions, which were often sloppy and inaccurate, and just intended to be easily-found to accommodate consumer fetishes. E621 has the “Gynomorph” and “Andromorph” tags, and a whole system around identifying the physical appearance of a character in an image.
As such, there’s also very little reason not use a range of tags specifying the gender of a character, when the entire purpose of a booru site is to accurately describe an image using tags for the purposes of searching/filtering. I propose that these changes are made, to imitate e621’s handling of this problem:
Futa - Alias’ed to “Intersex.” This is a general tag that still should not be used by itself, and should be accompanied by at least one of the following:
Gynomorph
Trans Female
  • Both of these should also imply the “Female” tag.
Andromorph
Trans Male
  • Both of these should also imply the “Male” tag.
Hermaphrodite
  • Only to be used in cases of actual hermaphroditism, meaning BOTH full sets of male and female genitalia.
In the case of ambiguity, the OC Owner (if applicable) should have the absolute final say on what gender to tag the character. In the case of canon characters, then the artist has that authority.

YES! Thank you. This has been bothering me for a long time, and this seems like a genuinely workable solution that actually increases user convenience and clarity in every way. Nice work putting in the research of how it’s done elsewhere - e621 does some weird stuff sometimes, but they seem to have things figured out in this regard.
I would be happy with this change.
GOLDENROD

I’m all in favor of this. E621’s approach is IMO objectively better, both in accessibility and being welcoming towards folks in the LGBTQ+ space.

I would wholeheartedly support these changes, the current system is simply lacking and downright insulting at times to trans folks who have had to deal with such tagging being applied to their art.

This is a win for everyone involved. More inclusive tagging means more detailed tagging, more detailed tagging means better search.

I support this, primarily because of LGBTQ inclusion reasons but also because “futanari” traditionally implies a feminine character with both a cock AND a pussy; so the tag isn’t accurate anyway.

I support this, it just seems generally more organized all around? Even though the initial changes might confuse some folks in the short term, it feels like it would be worth it in the long term.

Futa is a fetish tag. It’s not about inclusivity or being insensitive. FETISH. TAG.

@Vraddock
Your proposal differs from E621’s - per the links you provided, gynomorph/andromorph and female/male are separate and exclusive - gynomorph/andromorph should not imply female/male. This is necessary, because tags specifically identifying “male-resembling body with female genitals” and “female-resembling body with male genitals” are critical for user civility.
Also, your post seems to use “physical appearance” of bodies and “gender” interchangeably, which they definitely are not. (E621’s how-to unfortunately is phrased the same way despite acknowledging the issue with its own disclaimer.)

Plus it’s also a general Japanese term for hermaphrodites.
Please heed that tags are as much, if not more, for filtering and searching than identifying, and tags about genders and genitalia are very important in this, and what people are interested or not interested in porn do not nessesarily apply to what is stated to be.
@Background Pony #4922
Indeed, that’s correct, plus porn is what people get off to, or don’t get off to, and proper categorization and tagging for porn are not something that can just be ignored or modified for the sake of what is preferred.
I’m sorry, but generally people looking for things in porn like to see what they expect and are interested in, and tagging for that stuff is already imperfect, and often missing as it is. Tags are objective statements and hold no emotional weight.
I’ve been tagging things here for over ten years, and there’s still not a day that passes where even basic tags are applied consistently.
Something I do like on e6 is how a character’s sex and gender are not considered the same thing, because what people look for in terms of what they get off to is not going to nessesarily be what is stated but what is visualized.
Porn is like the one place where you should be absolutely transparent about what something depicted is.

@LightningBolt
Then tag it with both gynomorph and penis, as should be done anyway if there’s a penis in the picture. I fail to see how that is a valid criticism of the points raised.
@LightningBolt
Especially when what is being proposed is a more precise tagging system that will allow people to better filter things as opposed to the current system where, as was raised earlier, futa doesn’t even mean what it’s being used for.

@Vraddock
All of the images here use the same sets of tags, and all users, regardless of what they do and don’t look at, should be taken into account, tags are extremely important for searching and filtering. Futa isn’t exactly used for safe images.
@Gráinne Ní Bhroin
It is less precise, actually, and people do know what futa is used for typically. Tagging is just imperfect and mistakes happen and things get missed a lot. The usage of the futa tag has been long-standing for the purposes of filtering and searching to allow people to see and hide exactly what they do and don’t like.

From the description of a post that was vandalized with these tags
Not gonna fight with the tag gods, but just going to give a disclaimer for everyone here. Dash is a transmare in this i dont like the term futa for trans characters, just asking to please respect that. also its bullshit that this site doesnt allow a girl with a penis lovin on another girl to be tagged as ‘lesbian’. so im just gonna reiterate that these ponies are lesbian as fuck!
That sounds like there’s quite a bit of emotional weight going on here

What you have described is already not the case on this site. If someone posts art of a mare with a dick then two different tags could conceivably apply to it- “Futa” and “trans female”:
The tag for “futa” says,
“Futa are not to be tagged “female” or any tag that implies “female” such as “lesbian” or “straight”.
Meanwhile the tag for “trans female” correctly says that,
“Romantic/sexual interactions with such characters should be treated the same as with cisgendered females”
These two tags have different implications. Derpibooru already recognizes a difference between these categories based on what a person “prefers”. Yet there are people who go around changing the tags on trans art to be “futa” because of what THEY prefer. And, not to put too fine a point on it, but saying that “futa” characters cannot be called “female” or “lesbian” and tagging trans characters as futa is kind of implying that trans women aren’t women.
In general I do not think using Japanese terms to define gender or sex is a good idea. For instance there is another Japanese word that implies a woman with a dick (but no pussy) but it is usually considered to be a slur (it is “newhalf”) (moreso than what people may consider “futa” to be). Japanese society sadly does not tend to be welcoming of LGBTQ individuals.
Changing there to be one tag, “gynomorph” that encompasses the sexual aspects of both would, if anything, be clearer for tagging. Then, you could make all “gynomorph + female” be considered lesbian, and if people didn’t want to see that they could add “-gynomorph” to their search.

That emotional weight is not from the tags. The tags describe what someone expects to see when they search for the tag.
And if you find a post to have its tags ‘vandalized’, please report it, as I do not know what post you are referring to or what tags were even modified, so I cannot say what is even correct or incorrect.

@Miramore
It is not implying anything about reality becasue the tag description of futa refers to drawings of fictional characters. Any arguments about tags, their descriptions, meanings, or usages, should apply only to the things they are attached to drawings, they are not referring to real people and you should teach that mindset from this topic as it will not do anyone good, it is an unhealthy mindset to have, Drawings are not people, they do not have feelings, don’t attach yourself to them and then get emotionally invested to the point of offense.
And also, bringing up LGBTQ individuals as a collective is generalizing, and grouping people that may not all agree on anything as one collective, everyone is an individual, and should be treated as such.
What is this ‘other word’ you are referring to? What does this other word have to do with this topic if it isn’t here already as a tag? There are English words that also are slurs or mean negative things, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use English terms when they apply.
There’s…a lot of things going on here that do not apply to tags or how they are used.
