@Ciaran
Thanks for the detailed response! I completely understand why it has to be viewed case-by-case view, I just want to develop a couple of simple “rules-of-thumb” for guidance. I understand that it could be wrong at times, but I’m hoping for getting it more of a “We think you have strayed outside the lines” rather than a “The line is not the start of a long jump sand pit” if I get it wrong.
I’ve got a couple more questions.
1: I have serval images I’ve posted to other sites that don’t follow rule #1, but I’m thinking about reworking them so they do. Is a simple img2img pass into an art style that is in compliance good enough, or is that just “laundering” the dirty image like dirty money? If so, would a txt2img generation using a controlnet be ok, or would it run into the same issue?
2: For “highly commercial” a quick test I thought of is if you mostly purchase/consume the artists work under their name vs. a products name. For example, Rumiko Takahashi is the lead art designer for several very popular animes and mangas, and you consume and enjoy her works via that commercial medium, rather than directly, and would likely be ok to use.
Compare that to Ayako Rokkaku, whos art you do not consume via another name, such as a TV show, game, comic, etc., but rather more directly.
In short, when you see Takashi’s art, you tend to say “That’s a image from Inuyasha” and when you see Rokkaku’s you say “That’s a Rokkaku piece.” Does this sound sane?
3: If there’s some indication that an artist is ok with the use of AI image generation, what would be the best way to convey that information to the mods? For example, I found this article that, amongst other people, has some quotes from Mike Winkelmann, a.k.a “Beeple.” While the cover image is a big giant anti-AI image generation image done by him, at the end of the article there’s a line stating “His advice to up-and-coming digital artists is to do what he did: use the system as much as possible, and lean in.” To me that sounds like he’s ok with people using his stuff for generation, but I don’t want to get it wrong here.
Once again thanks for your time, and sorry for the wall of text. I was very wrong once, and I don’t want to be again.

that’s good to know. I didn’t think to start with the plain editor. at least I know now that this bug is limited to when the fancy tag editor is used.
@Ciaran
it doesn’t seem that any of the tags starting with a minus sign are widely used, or particularily useful.
I just tested the fancy editor with images that contain tags starting with other special characters, only a leading minus sign breaks the editor so there doesn’t seem to be any other worries on that front.

Also chiming in from east coast US here to say, this site is being slow and another popular (adult) image site (rule34.xxx) is being extremely slow to load for me as well.
Just out of curiosity… does anyone else experiencing this issue have Xfinity as their ISP? I’m beginning to become suspicious. (I don’t have a VPN to test with)

UPDATE: I have tested Chromium (Chrome) versions 67, 87, 84, 80 and 79 to determine the lowest-possible version where the JS doesn’t break. The results:
Chrome 84 (mid-2020) and 87 (late 2020) and newer = everything works perfectly, no errors in JS, no visual bugs
Chrome 80 (early 2020) = no errors in JS and normal site displays fine, but redesign layout is a bit derped as it uses some newer CSS features like gap in flexboxes
Chrome 79 and 67 = JS errors, site doesn’t work or load properly

Usually, my internet connection has been running at decent speeds.
However, for the past few days now, it has for some reason seemingly slowed to garbage speeds. So I checked by trying a speed test a few times, and it shows my connection’s results possibly reaching a maximum of around “2.28 Mbps download” and “0.78 Mbps upload” (which is apparently “very slow”).

(please do not respond to this topic unless you know what it’s about AND have seen the site, also don’t post the link to the secret testing site here)
Congratulations! You found the super secret redesign beta testing site. This topic is probably very confusing for anyone who hasn’t come from the place the link to this topic is intended to reside. Anyway, I’m here to put some of the concerns at ease:
Q: OMG redesign sucks, I hate it, everything looks broken and crappy!
A: …okay? Got it out of your system? Good. Now calm down and read this thread a bit further.
Q: Seriously, though, why does it look so broken?
A: The code is incomplete, simple as that. The base is only 40% or so finished, and I have had no chance to look closer at changing the actual HTML templates. I’ve been at work making a CSS framework (think something like Bootstrap or Tailwind, but of my own creation) that I am proud of.
Q: I hate the round corners! And what’s with the lack of borders everywhere! AND FORCED CENTERED LAYOUT??? THIS SUCKS!
A: All of these things (and many many more) will be configurable in redesign, since the new frontend code base lets us offer these customizations, while the old one didn’t offer this flexibility.
Q: Why are you doing this?
A: Because I like suffering. On a more serious note, though, redesign will allow us to offer more customization options to you, while also making it much easier to code the themes and frontend of the site. The current design has been made in 2015 and it was wonderful for the time, but as time passes we bump very painfully both into its shortcomings, as well as bloat it accumulated over the years of various updates and features implementations.
Q: OK but why not just keep the appearance the same? Why change the looks?
A: Because I think I can do better. I think the redesign, when finished, will offer you a better browsing experience, especially on phones (which are now the dominant source of traffic coming to our site, by the way). The desktop browsing experience will remain largely the same, just with some fresh coat of paint on top of it, while the mobile design will see a complete overhaul and the biggest layout changes.
Q: What will change?
A: Primarily the CSS stylesheets of the site. If you’re unfamiliar with what CSS is, think of it like a technical description of how the site is supposed to look. In conjunction with HTML, which determines what belongs where, it can make things more presentable for the end user.
Q: What else will change?
A: Some layouts of the site were hastily slapped together while we were making Philomena, while being on huge time constraints to move away from Booru-on-Rails. Those will be seeing changes, for example the UI of account settings page, or the entirety of the moderation tools.
Q: Will you add/change/remove X?
A: Maybe. Maybe not. I currently have an internal plan, and I’m sticking to it. When I’m through with my plan, I’ll see if I can make some of the suggestions I hear happen. Due to the scope of the redesign being entirely within the layout/looks of the site, I can’t do anything that requires altering existing controllers, or changing database.
Q: I have feedback about the current state of the redesign!
A: If something looks broken, chances are I know about it and simply haven’t gotten the chance to look at it yet. If something doesn’t look broken but you still have feedback about it, feel free to tell me.
Q: I have a suggestion!
A: Sure, I’d love to hear it!

I repeat, do not respond to this topic unless you know what’s going on.

Leap of Faith

This episode gets credit for being a bit more advanced; exploring topics like false hope, placebos, and the idea that a person’s word means something. Unfortunately, watching it was a bit like trying to rewatch The Magic School Bus as an adult; it’s great at teaching, but I don’t find much entertainment value in it. And like The Magic School Bus, it would have benefitted from an afterword about the importance of just talking to your doctor.
I kind of like the idea that Granny Smith tried the tonic. She doesn’t have a reason to trust them, but I like how it shows that elders aren’t immune to scams, and how a person can let their guard down when it’s something they really want.
The song is nowhere near as memorable as the one from Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000.
This one’s fine, and there’s nothing really wrong with it. It’s just not for me.

Testing, Testing, 1,2,3

I don’t have a ton to say about it. I like how it explores different styles of learning. I love how it gives Twilight and Rainbow something to bond over. And I especially love how it adds an extra bit of depth to Rainbow’s character; she has insecurities about her own intelligence.
And then the whole town getting together to help Rainbow was just the sweetest thing ever. I’m not sure it’s a sustainable learning method, but it’s a good springboard to get kids thinking about their own learning style. It gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Trade Ya!

Trade Ya! is a nice simple downtime episode. It’s funny, there are lots of fun little easter eggs to spot, and it’s just characters doing stuff. Including Twilight finally doing some princess stuff. I enjoyed this one.

Inspiration Manifestation

This could have probably been an 11-minute episode. It’s trying to be about addiction, but it only covers the “enabling” aspect. What would have really been cool is if Spike had told the truth at the halfway point, and then the rest of the episode is about her struggling to function without the magic. Maybe she relapses and goes after the book again. They wasted a perfectly good metaphor.
It’s really weird that Rarity is this upset over something like a puppet theatre. She makes costumes for celebrities, and this is the most upset we’ve seen her since Suited for Success.

Equestria Games

They did Dave Polsky dirty. A single line from Rainbow Falls meant that Equestria Games was barely about the Equestria Games they’ve been building up since Season Three. Instead, it’s about Spike’s weird self-esteem issues. The sequence of events leads to a weird situation where hundreds of lives are at stake, there are four alicorns in the arena, and it falls to Spike to save the day.
This episode missed its calling as a worldbuilding episode. What sorts of athletic competitions do these ponies have. If you come up with five games, and dedicate two to three minutes to each, that’s ten to fifteen minutes of the episode filled. Maybe there’s some kind of shotput, where unicorns have to throw the shotput through an anti-magic barrier, and there’s a ceiling so pegasi can’t use flight to gain an unfair height advantage. Or Polo. Ponies playing polo would be kind of funny.
This one was a huge letdown.

derp, i left the redesign branch running instead of downtiming it, i meant to test if it deploys correctly and to determine what to look at next, i didn’t mean for anyone to see it yet
To note:
  • CSS there is 40-50% complete, a lot is missing
  • HTML isn’t adjusted for some CSS
  • lots of stuff just hasn’t been looked at yet

What you saw is entirely and utterly incomplete and is not representative of what the redesign will look like

I’ll change the branch there to the one with JS bundler changes and then you can tell me whether JS works, since that’s what I wanted feedback on.
upd: beta site now has the stuff I actually want you to look at! navigate here: https://beta.derpibooru.org/

Underrated? I’ve never heard anyone describe Testing Testing, 1, 2, 3 as a bad episode, everything I’ve ever heard about that one made me feel pretty safe to say that it was generally regarded as a classic. Even during a time when people were much more critical of Season 4, I was always seeing acclaim for that episode as one of the best of the season, praising how relatable it was with how we’ve all had issues with studying.

I’ve tried several different words. Even “tested” it several times. Got tired of having to re-login to the site.
But the first post was something along the line of “This post got Necro-ed” something innocuous.
But everytime I attempt to make a post, ANY POST on that particular image. I get booted out of my account. It kept shifting to mobile mode from my usual desktop mode. Yeah, I’m posting it on my PC.

My big concern is what exactly does she mean by “holistic therapy”? If it is indeed what you are describing, of a therapist performing tests to determine if someone is really, truly, for realsies trans, that flies dangerously close to Gender Exploratory Therapy, which is a modified form of conversion therapy to get around laws banning it. Basically GET presupposes out the gate that the patient can’t possibly be trans, and to focus all efforts on finding the “reason you think you’re trans” and resolving/removing it so you can go back to being cisgender.
The main goal is to keep actually transitioning permanently out of reach while they move the goalposts for confirming someone is “really trans.”

@Natry
Well it’s not therapy itself I’m questioning but rather the type of therapy
Cass in her report recommends a shift from affirmative therapy, which is what current gender clinics are practicing allegedly, to “holistic therapy”, which I assume, based on her findings from the rest of the report, means a form of gender therapy where the therapist may do several tests on a patient and see whether their gender dysphoria is legit or if it may stem from other causes
Now, how a therapist can figure that out, I don’t know, and how a therapist can approach this with their patient without coming dangerous close to conversion therapy(what if a therapist tries to force their interpretation of where their dysphoria comes from onto the patient?), I also don’t know, but I really do wonder, where’s the scientific backing that this therapy is better than affirmative therapy? Is it just based off intuition?
I can think of half a dozen scenarios where this holistic therapy for gender dysphoria can go horribly awry, and while one can point out it may be paranoid of me to do so, considering Dr Cass’s report recommends a pause in puberty blockers until further research due to potential harm, it just seems a bit weird she then goes onto recommend something without much research into it at all

So the Cass Report has been recently released in the UK and a lot of buzz has been spread around it
Anti Trans activists have essentially paraded it as a coup de grace while trans activists are very much not happy over it
There’s also a lot of concern about potential biases in the report, unreasonable arguments made in it and questionable statements overall. One such supposed unreasonable argument being that the report allegedly disqualifies studies on puberty blockers and hormones on the basis of not using double-blind testing, even if double-blind testing would be unethical and/or practically impossible to conduct in those settings
Now I don’t know about the legitness of any of that, because I’m not a medical professional, and in the coming months it will be litigated in journals across the world and I will leave it to those who are actually trained in the subject to engage in it
One thing I would like to note about this report is this, it isn’t really the coup de grace that anti trans activists are making it out to be
The most damning thing in this report against the trans movement is that current research on puberty blockers and HRT on minors is flawed and more research is needed
That’s it
It doesn’t say puberty blockers doesn’t work, it doesn’t say HRT doesn’t work(hell the report even goes onto say that in select circumstances, HRT can be proscribed to 16-17 year olds, albeit not often), it simply states that more research is needed before we can come to a conclusion, and I think it goes without saying they didn’t review every piece of research there is on puberty blockers on minors(correct me if I’m wrong, but the studies the Cass report reviewed were only from the University of York, right?)
The fact I’m unironically seeing people call for all biological females under 18 to be banned from transitioning over this is fucking insane
It also ignores that the report actually criticises the long waiting period that trans children have to go through to receive care but you wouldn’t hear that from those who parade it like the second coming of Christ do you?
Edit:
Actually, going to page our resident psychologist Zincy here, what are your brief thoughts on this? Since you are probably the most qualified to speak on this subject(by no means saying you are an expert, just that you obviously know more than the rest of us)
I especially wonder your thoughts on the whole “double blind testing” and its practicality and morality in regards to using it with puberty blockers and HRT

Interesting, our emissions and safety checks are done at the same time.
Baffling that they would cease safety checks while keeping emissions tests. I guess if a car kills you or cripples you for life (due to failed brakes etc), you can die or suffer with the comforting fact that the car was compliant with emission standards 🤷
It’s a separate test here for motorcycles too; you can ride a 50cc moped on car licence though or a 125cc with L plates (you can’t have a pillion). As for vehicle dimensions there is no limit, you can drive a 12M/39FT x 2.5M/8FT vehicle granted it doesn’t exceed 3.5T.

In America, it depends. Emissions tests are almost-always mandated in urban and suburban areas, but most rural areas don’t require emissions. I believe California and New York State mandate emissions tests statewide, regardless of if you live in a big city or out in the middle of nowhere. Some states also have separate inspections for safety (i.e.: brakes, windshield, headlights, taillights, etc.)
In Utah County, Utah (where I currently live); we just take our car to Jiffy Lube or anyone who advertises they do emissions tests once a year. We used to do safety inspections as well, but we stopped in 2017. I’m looking to move to Las Vegas, Nevada or Phoenix, Arizona in the near future and I think both those areas just do emissions, too.
As far as “regular car license,” which is a Class D license in Utah, you can drive your typical personal vehicles from the humble Toyota Corolla to the big boy pickup trucks such as the Ford F-150 and even some RVs under a certain length. You’ll need a separate endorsement to drive motorcycles. And Class A, B and C licenses are for those larger commercial trucks.

Just out of interest, how are vehicle inspections done in your locality?
In England once a car is over 3 years old it is inspected, as part of a “MOT” annually, the inspection takes about 30-45 minutes.
I was reading a post on FB that inspections in Belgium are required biannually after the car is 4 years old. The test takes about 20 minutes and is done as a “drive-though” service. Pretty bizarre to us Brits.
Also what can you drive on a regular car license?
In Britain you can drive any rigid vehicle up to 3.5T, if you passed prior to 1997 it’s up to 7.5T.
@RD4590
+1 to that.
